Victorian Oil on Copper Miniature, 'Jesus with Mary & St. Anne'

A 19th century copper framed oil on copper panel depicting Jesus with Mary and St. Anne in an Interior which is based on 17th century Flemish and Continental oil paintings on the same subject. They were in turn influenced by Da Vinci who worked on the subject in the early 1500’s. The original story being rooted in religion.

Jesus with Mary & St. Anne, Victorian Oil on Copper

The transportation of Jesus, his mother and grandmother into a Victorian boudoir is unusual but fitting for the period. The piece was painted with a small brush, in oils onto a round copper panel. When regarded from this lens you can see the work that originally went into creating this.

The frame itself is, I believe, more the work of art with chased engraving to almost the entire surface. A very handsome example that will have been cast and finished by hand, chasing included. Although I have never tested the theory, I do believe there is a smaller frame nested within the larger. Some of the teeth are missing, however, I would highly advise against trying to separate the pieces.

Both the painting and frames are original to the period stated, they were crafted for each other which always adds to the charm of such pieces.
