Early 19th Century, Georgian Cannetille Brooch (ca. 1820 - 1830)
A Georgian cannetille brooch / pendant dating to the 1st / 2nd quarter of the 18th century. Crafted from a sheet of 22 karat gold (tested) with embellished bead, tendril and scroll work in a delicate, open-worked design. The design depicts a cross (Coptic) with a central rose motif, worked in exquisite detail. These types of pieces of jewellery tended to be made in the 1820s and 1830s with this piece falling into the category of plate cannetille wherein a flat plate of gold has been used with finer work soldered onto the surface.
The style of Cannetille originates from a depressed era in European history where the cost of labour was low; leading to may of these hand-made pieces. Cannetille is also rare due to the short period in which they were produced and the practice of melting down unsaleable pieces in what was a gold and cash-poor era.
