A lovely, and rather unique, transitional period blue and white vase with lugged handles. Under painted in a deep cobalt blue with an unusual scroll or woodblock style scene contemporary to the late Ming, early Qing period when there was a marked shift in painting styles. From the imperial decreed, formalised, scenes to a more open oeuvre informed by both domestic and international, European and Japanese, tastes.
The vase is marked Yu Tang Jia Qi ( ) which translates to "Precious receptacle of the Jade Hall." Contrary to what one might think, this did not mean wares reserved for the imperial court but rather that the piece was suitable for someone's grand hall.
In this regard, the porcelain is a deep white shade with a bluish tinge and is extremely fine. The material, clay and kaolin, was high quality and the firing was highly successful which gives the porcelain a particular, whitish-blue glow. Imagine, if you will, 'violets in milk' (Gotheborg).
Height: 21 cm
