A lovely, Victorian era, 9 carat rose gold brooch inset with a shell cameo depicting the Greek / Roman god, Hermes (Mercury) in profile.
A beautifully carved example of its type with great detailing to the winged helm and gently curled hair. The facial features are also very pleasingly carved, this is quite a nice example of its type.
The mount is also beautifully made with textured borders that is all hand-worked. The cameo is also not straight around the edges so the craftsman, J.C (possibly James Crichton), has skillfully moulded the gold around the undulating edges.
All in all, a very well worked example.
Weight: 9.5 grams
Height: 4.4 cm
Width: 3.7 cm
Condition: in fantastic condition although the safety chain is a different coloured gold, and a replacement.
