A rare 9 carat gold, pounamu rei niho (whale's tooth) pendant which is symbolic of the Maori's intimate connection with the whale (tohor). It denotes peace and tranquility, as well as many other things that one would ascribe to these peaceful creatures.
This is an old piece of jewellery that would date to the turn of the century and is fully stamped 'A & C' for the makers, as well as 9 carat gold.
It's also a fantastic representation of Maori craftsmanship and really demonstrates why these pieces were so popular with early visitors to New Zealand in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Condition: It's in fantastic condition. No damage to note. Wear commensurate with it's age.
